Off-peak is the answer when your dream is to endure Minnesota’s winter from a distance.

Twenty years of keeping a secret is a good run but when National Geographic calls you out in their Best Trips in 2019, it’s time to come clean in the beautiful waters of South Walton Beach on Florida’s panhandle.

This National Geographic feature invokes the Peruvian Amazon and French Polynesia as it speaks of South Walton’s 26 miles of America’s best beaches. However, in winter, there’s one thing that South Walton doesn’t have—people.

Winter weekdays serve up a virtually private beach. You’ll have your pick of beachside tables. Or visit with a bartender who has the time to give you the lay of the land (and waters).

Regular tourists come in summer—often making the 5-hour drive from Atlanta, Birmingham and New Orleans. But if you’re battling cold fronts in Minnesota, temps ranging from the 50 degrees to the 70s can sound like a day at the beach—and it literally is.

Here’s the kicker. Off-season rates! Rent a beautifully appointed Rosemary Beach home at a lower day rate then the Holiday Inn available on the way down. That said, off-peak is the answer when your dream is to endure Minnesota’s winter from a distance.
