Joe Brandmeier: Wild Life, Wild Photos

An Edina man finds peace in photographing nature, far away from his life producing and directing documentaries and videos.

On weekdays, Joe Brandmeier directs dozens of people on the set of video productions. On the weekends, he can be found alone, camped out in front of a bear den.

His wife, Joan Steffand, the former KARE 11 anchor, says Brandmeier will bring the same commitment he has for producing and directing to his camping and focusing on quality photographs during his stakeouts.

“I’ve heard stories of him sitting in front of a bear den for days,” Steffand says. “I couldn’t imagine him sitting in our living room for three days. Being in nature and knowing that there is the possibility of a good shot, he has a patient and a peaceful feeling. I think it balances his life out.”

Between projects with the likes of Prince, Garrison Keillor, The Fugees and others, Brandmeier has compiled a photo and quotation book called Up North: Reflections, Moments & Memories.
