Joe Dunn, a basketball player for Benilde-St. Margaret’s, says his proudest moment was last year when he coached an Our Lady of Grace seventh grade boys’ basketball team with one of his older brothers. Joe says, “The team had only won one or two games the year before, and they started off the season not very good.” The team then made it to the playoffs and Joe loved watching how the players came together.
Another highlight for Joe was winning three basketball state championships in a row with his Edina 6A, 7A and 8A traveling teams. He says that experience “really helped my interest in basketball grow and take off from there.”
He thinks that basketball is the best sport for camaraderie and teamwork because the team “struggles together and succeeds together.”
Joe continues to give back to the basketball community here in Edina by coaching camps for elementary and middle school boys during the summer and has volunteered with a special needs team. “It brings me joy to see them succeed,” he says.
Joe is an honor student and volunteers at Interfaith Outreach because, he says, “There are people who go through struggles, even here in Edina.” He makes it a priority to help.
