It’s hard to believe the holiday season is already upon us. How is it that Halloween costumes and candy are already being clearanced out, and store shelves are filled to the brim with holiday decor? It feels like just yesterday that pumpkin spice lattes were hitting coffee shops. While my social schedule tends to get a bit over-full in the last two months of the year, I take solace in the fact that I can also fill up on time with loved ones—not to mention delicious seasonal food, drinks and treats. No matter how many years it’s been since being in school, September continues to be “back to school” season in my mind. Even in my 30s, it’s hard to shake that feeling of this month being a fresh start. Honestly, after a summer of activity and a more relaxed schedule, it’s kind of nice to have a reason—even if it’s all in my head—to hit reset and refocus on what I want to tackle for the last four months of the year. In the past two years, we’ve lost a lot of what was once “normal.” We’ve had to change our routines, adjust our expectations, question our worldviews and experience a great sense of loss. But at the same time, despite all the pain, division and frustrations, here we are. We’re still standing—even if we are a bit more battered and bruised than we were before. I just want to acknowledge that it’s taken a lot of bravery and perseverance for each of us to make it here today.
