Teens learn to cook in family and consumer science classes.

Meal preparation is an essential skill, but too often young people never even learn how to boil an egg. At Edina High School, students can acquire a variety of life skills.

“[Cooking classes] give the students a chance to shed their skin,” says Kourtnee Baukol, teacher of the three elective cooking courses. The classes teach a variety of skills from simple cooking, to cooperation and creativity. Students are encouraged to relax and really get into their projects while adjusting recipes to their preferences. They also often learn about each other in the process, since food is a huge aspect of everyone’s home life.

“I love seeing everyone so happy,” says Baukol. “Everyday it’s, ‘What are we doing, Mrs. B? Awesome, let’s do it.’”
