Drew Dillon, 17
The Blake School
Drew Dillon is one of those rare souls who are both artistically and athletically inclined.
“Drew Dillon has been a crucial contributor to life at Blake,” says Karen Phillips, advisor and upper school science teacher at Blake. “Drew is an outstanding athlete and captain in two varsity programs, baseball and basketball, and a gifted artist who explores his creativity in both painting and photography.”
He was the first junior in a decade to be selected as the baseball team’s captain. “I’m very proud of being selected as captain in two sports by my teammates in my junior year,” Drew says. “This achievement means a lot to me because it is a reflection of my hard work, leadership and dedication to team success.” It was no small feat, as Drew transferred to Blake in the 9th grade. “It means a lot to me that I was able to build so many important relationships in just a couple of years,” he says.
What’s also important to him is his art.
“I really enjoy art. I love photography, painting and drawing. When I was younger, I was very artistic and loved to draw. But as middle school came around, I just stopped,” he says. “In my freshman year, I picked up a photography class and fell in love. Then, sophomore and junior year, I took a drawing class and two painting classes. My school has really reignited my connection with art, and I’m forever grateful for that.”
Drew also combined his love for art and sports by taking photos for sports teams at Blake. In his spare time, he volunteers for Edina Give & Go. He and two friends started a baseball skills clinic for youth who wanted to try out for the team. Money raised from the clinic was donated to Give & Go. After high school, he hopes to play baseball for a highly academic university.
“Friendly, compassionate and talented, Drew Dillon is a terrific young person,” Phillips says.
