Edina High School (EHS)

George Rerat adores politics. “I spend ridiculous amounts of time keeping up with Edina politics, along with the state government,” George says. “I get a great amount of enjoyment from knowing the ins and outs of every politician who represents me and knowing their positions on different topics. Furthermore, I like to know what is happening in our community. People often come to me when they need to get caught up on the most recent school board or city council meeting.”

George uses his enthusiasm for local government in his work at the EHS newspaper, Zephyrus, where he is the multimedia editor. “This achievement represents a lot of hard work that I put into Zephyrus and serves as proof to my dedication for sharing news and stories within the Edina community,” he says. “I found a community that shared my enthusiasm for news and sharing the truth that isn’t often found in high school communities.”

George is inspired by Sara Swenson, the EHS media specialist. He spends a lot of time at media centers across the school district, where he is an intern. “Regardless of the situation, she is kind, respectful and caring. However, when she needs to, she can be very serious and direct, allowing her to effectively communicate her point and get the results that she needs,” George says. “She isn’t afraid to have her opinion heard … I strive to replicate her level of professionalism and communication skills in my life.”

After high school, George wants to attend college. He hasn’t decided what he’d like to study. “I have many different areas of interest, including politics, law, aviation and sciences,” he says.
