Local builder designs a new condo community.

Custom builders City Homes—headquartered in Edina—is known for designing and building high-end single-family homes. The Edina Flats building is a departure for them. City Homes co-owner and co-founder Rebecca Remick says that they saw an underserved market and thought they could fill in the gap.

“We knew that there were people who had raised their families in Edina and wanted to stay in Edina … in their community … but also wanted a different lifestyle,” she says. “It isn’t so much about downsizing as it’s about rightsizing.”

Edina Flats, which is scheduled to be completed this summer, is a 15-unit condominium development designed and built by City Homes working with Brooke Voss Interior Design. The units range in size from a 6000-square foot penthouse to a 1500-square foot two-bedroom unit.

There are five multi-story buildings in the development, with several different combinations of floor plans in each building. Every condo unit has at least one balcony or deck. All have the option of a private, two stall garage and there’s also underground parking.

Standard finishes are things like white oak hardwood floors and quartz and granite countertops. Available upgrades give buyers the option of custom cabinetry, paneling and molding and some specialty windows, among other possibilities like high-end appliances.

Remick says that people expect certain things from a City Homes project and these condos don’t deviate from that. “We knew we had to stay with our brand,” she says. “That means finishes that could be found in any of our single-family homes … and attention to detail.”

One of the things that distinguishes Edina Flats from other condominium buildings is the arrangement of the units. Each unit sits at the corner of a building—there are no long hallways and all units have windows on three sides.

City Homes believes buyers will also appreciate the location. Condominiums and apartments are often built in commercial districts, but City Homes wanted to build this project in a place that didn’t feel like an office park.

“It’s in a very walkable neighborhood,” Remick says. “And, a lot of the best things Edina has to offer are nearby.” Things like shopping at the Galleria, and the shops and restaurants of 50th & France … but also Pamela Park and the Centennial Lakes Farmers Market.

A model is scheduled to be ready for viewing on the first of June, with a grand opening event to follow. Dates and details will be available on the website—edinaflatsmn.com or at cityhomesllc.com.

Interest in the property was pretty strong as soon as it was announced; six of the 15 units were reserved within the first couple of months, as construction was just getting underway. It seems to prove that the City Homes folks are right about identifying a demographic it could serve in the Edina housing market.
