Juneteenth marks the historic announcement of emancipation for enslaved African Americans in Texas on June 19, 1865. This came two and half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by President Abraham Lincoln. Union Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced General Order Number 3, which proclaimed the total emancipation of slaves in Texas. Juneteenth celebrates this day as the end of slavery in the United States.

Edina’s event promises to be a memorable experience that honors our shared history and inspires hope for the future. It’s an opportunity to come together, learn and celebrate the quest for civil rights and equality.
