One of the most memorable ways to celebrate America’s 250th birthday isn’t with fireworks but with a road trip. For Minnesotans, the drive west to the Black Hills of South Dakota is practically a rite of passage.
Driving mile after mile through the prairie, you suddenly stumble upon a sculpture garden of epic proportions and a “palace” made of corn. Soon the grasslands give way to a moonlike rocky landscape of jagged cliffs and striped stone straight out of Star Wars.
After a day of exploring the rocky crevices and letting your children discover their inner mountain goats, you drive into beautiful forestland. And suddenly, through the trees you see one of the most iconic symbols of America this side of the Mississippi River: Mount Rushmore National Memorial.
As you stare in awe of this feat of engineering, you realize that sometimes the best way to celebrate our country is simply to explore it and the world beyond our own backyard.
