Remember your beloved hands-free bag from the late ’80s, early ’90s? It was your go-to for shopping, art festivals and travel–the ultimate bag for convenience. The fanny pack.

Determining who invented the fanny pack is rather controversial. Some claim an Australian woman who wanted to replicate a kangaroo pouch designed it in the 1960s. Others claim cavemen originally created it to carry tools and food. That would date this genius hands-free bag back to 3,300 B.C. Regardless of who invented the original fanny pack–it’s back and hitting the fashion scene by storm. Only this time, it’s been reinvented under a new, more stylish name–the belt bag.
