On my podcast, Drink in the Style LIVE, I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing dozens of artists. One question I often ask is, “Does an artist need to master realism before moving into the abstract?” It’s an important inquiry that addresses the common critique: “My 8-year-old could paint that.”
In my opinion, and one shared by many artists, the answer is, “Yes.” The abstract work you might see—squiggly lines or overlapping circles—isn’t as simple as it appears. More often than not, the artist behind it could easily outpace your 8-year-old in creating a detailed portrait. But those skills are being redirected. The “squiggles” are meticulously planned, the product of years of training, experience and technique. What might look like chaotic expression is, in reality, a refined method of conveying complex ideas. So, the next time you see abstract art, remember: It’s more than color and form—it’s the artist’s expertise at work, communicating something far deeper.
