One collection of plates can take you from everyday dinners to elegant special occasions.

It’s one of the most enjoyable tasks on the way to the altar: creating the wedding registry. In the movies, there’s always that scene where the newly engaged couple lovingly chooses a china pattern. But in real life, it can feel overwhelming to stand in the middle of the housewares department or scroll through endless options online to narrow down the ideal dishes. What’s essential, and what can wait? The good news is that two sets of place settings (traditionally one for everyday and one for formal events) aren’t always needed. Some couples are embracing versatile pieces that transition seamlessly from casual dinners to celebratory gatherings. For those who are unsure where to begin, we turned to Heather Fox—the design director of Foxwell—for advice.

How can couples create a set that easily transitions from everyday to formal?

I always suggest starting with a simple, neutral foundation like stoneware dishes or matte porcelain in a warm white, cream or soft color. From there, layer in details that can shift the mood. It’s all about pieces that feel relaxed enough for takeout on a Tuesday but can be elevated with a few thoughtful accents for a Saturday dinner party.

What are your must-have basics for every household?

A timeless dinnerware set, quality flatware and everyday glassware that feels good in your hand. I also believe simple serving pieces that work throughout the year and for all types of hosting are a must have. It’s easy to build on the basics once you figure what you’re missing for how you entertain.

How can couples avoid overbuying while still having options for hosting?

Focus on versatile pieces that layer easily. In my opinion, you don’t need multiple sets. Focus on one solid everyday base, and add a few accent pieces like salad plates, napkins or a few special glasses to change the overall vibe. I personally love vintage glassware, and my rule is that they don’t have to match. Having each setting have a unique glass makes it feel special and is easy for your guest to find their glass if you’re enjoying a cocktail before dinner. Overall, mixing and matching creates visual interest without a big investment.

Are there materials or finishes that strike the right balance between durability and elegance?

Yes! I love mixing matte finishes with subtle shine. For example, matte ceramics, paired with a bit of brass or hand-blown glass, adds just enough sophistication without feeling fussy. Stoneware is wonderfully durable for daily use, while brushed metals or cut glass bring that evening glow for entertaining. And I always love adding touches of color to change the mood and amp up the style.

Are there color palettes or patterns that easily transition from day to night?

Warm neutrals always ground a table beautifully; think sand, oat and clay tones. I also love introducing muted greens, blush or terracotta for personality. They feel organic during the day but take on a moody, candlelit glow at night. Small hits of pattern, like a block-printed napkin or a stripe, keep things from feeling too serious. Linen napkins, a textured runner and colored glassware can instantly make the everyday simple settings feel special. Candle holders with taper candles at different heights, and textured glassware go a long way. I love swapping the taper candles and the table runner to create a fresh mood each season.

Heather Fox suggests warm neutrals in clay, oat and sand tones—all of which are a great way to ground a table.

What are your go-to tricks for instantly dressing up a weekday table for a dinner party?

Layer in texture and light! Add a table runner or some stems of greenery, dim the lights and light candles at varying heights. Even easy florals in a sculptural vase can make a simple table feel special. I think hydrangeas are always the easiest floral. I also love using small bowls or trays to corral salt, herbs or citrus, which are all little styling moments that feel effortless but elevated.

How important is consistency between tableware and other décor elements, like centerpieces or linens?

It matters, but it shouldn’t feel matchy-matchy. The goal is cohesion, not coordination. Repeating a tone or texture, like the warmth of wood from your dining chairs echoed in your serving pieces will help everything flow naturally. When the table feels layered and connected to your home’s overall palette, it feels both intentional and inviting. I think my main advice would be to not overthink it!
