The ins and outs of planning your holiday portrait.

Photographers Andrew Vick and Kate Schmitt offer top tips for capturing your best family portrait.

What to wear

Vick suggests jewel tones and neutrals, especially colors on the coffee spectrum. “You don’t want to use colors that are not found in nature,” Vick says. Schmitt suggests making sure your clothes fit and that you feel good in them.

When and where to shoot

For the best natural light outdoors, shoot in the morning or evening. Schmitt also notes that if smaller children are involved, they might be better to work with in the morning. “Pick a location that has meaning to you,” says Vick. “Architecture and nature are backgrounds that won’t date.”
